Tell Us Your Story!

As we strive for justice and peace, we can learn from what each other are doing. We can share in our successes and collaborate on our challenges. Post your stories - from everyday advocacy (the little things that sometimes happen and you even don't realize they're advocacy until it's over) to parish and community efforts that you are a part of. This is the place for Episcopalians to share how we are striving for justice and peace! Take a few minutes to tell us how you've made a difference in your community. You'll be amazed at how just one story – yours – could inspire people around the world. We welcome your contribution!

Peanut Butter and Jelly Collections

I was reading the local newspaper when I saw an article titled "Spread the Word: Peanut Butter Ministry Needs New Sponsor". I checked with the Vestry Outreach person at Grace Episcopal Church in Georgetown, TX, she provided a barrel which she put in the parish hall and our collection began. Thirteen months later we at Grace Church, the Grace Preschool, San Gabriel Presbyterian Church, and Calvary Chapel have provided monthly supplies of p.b. and j. for the Meals on Wheels clients of Georgetown.

An Outreach Story

At St. Mark's in Santa Clara we have a group we call Outreach. Every month or so we go to downtown San Jose to a small church dwarfed by the large, modern city hall building to serve a dinner for the outcast and homeless people. They of course each have a story of their own to tell. Recently we went to serve, and there were no children present as there had been in the past. We wondered about that (wonder is one of the key words we chose to work around in 2008); one of the older members of our church recalled that Innvision was at work in San Jose and that the children were being cared for there. It is a pleasure for us to serve, especially since the spaghetti sauce is becoming gourmet, so often have we used our leader's recipe.

Advocacy for Children

Our Christ Church Social Outreach ccmmittee launched the Backpack program for in need children. We called various groups in the community that we knew would want to work with the program --then set a meeting time and invited others to join us. We had a speaker come from the Community Food Bank Program to share insights on how to get the program going. And amazing 23 people, along with the media, showed and we were off and running, ECW of Chrich Church pledged $500 to get the program going and also agreed to fund it that amount every year. Fifteen people signed on to contiune the exporation, plan the program so it could begin in the Fall, 2009, with a pilot school-- The School's Food Director and the manager of the HyVEE Food Stores agreed to work closely with us. So at the next meeting on July 10, 2009, we hope to have a full board and begin the fund raising, explore all the other needs. Our children will not only have good food during the week, but now also on weekends.
