    Policy Alert

Blasting has begun on Coal River Mountain in West Virginia, and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) confirmed that coal was being moved off the mountain. This was devastating news to local residents who have rallied around a plan to build a wind farm on the peaks of Coal River Mountain, the highest ever slated for mountaintop removal mining. The proposed wind farm would provide enough wind potential to provide electricity for over 85,000 homes, as well as clean, permanent jobs to the community. All God's people share the responsibility of protecting lands and water so that all of humankind, especially those living in poverty and generations yet to come, may use and enjoy Creation.

Subject:Stop the Mining at Coal River Mountain
    Dear Mr. President:

Lands and water are essential parts of God's Creation. I appreciate your agency's efforts to curtail the world's worst coal mining, mountaintop removal. This strip mining continues to decapitate America's oldest mountains, clear-cut lush forests, destroy diverse wildlife habitat, pollute headwater streams, poison drinking water and threaten local communities. Already several hundred mountains have been leveled throughout Appalachia. Recently, blasting began on Coal River Mountain, which has the highest peaks ever slated for mining in West Virginia. This was devastating news to local residents who have rallied around a plan to build a wind farm on the peaks of Coal River Mountain. To date, West Virginia Governor Manchin has rejected the pleas of local residents to save Coal River Mountain by supporting the wind project. Other state and federal officials have also turned a deaf ear. Without a doubt, the Obama administration is the last, best hope to save Coal River Mountain and protect the people who live in its shadow. God gives us freedom to use the earth's resources, but we need to use them in a way that honors God's Creation, not destroys it, and which sustains God's people. Coal River Mountain may well represent the fork in the road when it comes to fulfilling the Obama administration's vision for America's energy future. The choice is between forging a path toward a clean energy economy or continuing on with "business as usual" that would reduce another Appalachian peak into a pile of rubble. We respectfully request that you prevent further devastation to Coal River Mountain with destructive mountain top removal mining.
